Port Washington

Welcome to the Hamlet of Port Washington, NY.

Port Washington, New York, simply and fondly dubbed as “Port” by those who love it most, is a charming village, quietly tucked away along Nassau County’s fabled north shore.

Tree-lined streets, beautiful parks, and breath-taking views of Manhasset Bay make living, working, or vacationing in Port Washington a relaxing retreat. It is far enough from the bustle of nearby New York City, 27 miles away…while still being easily accessible via State Route 101 and the Long Island Railroad. Commuters count a mere 3 train stops on the express train with no transfers, to Penn Station, New York - 35 minutes from city life to peaceful paradise.

Port Washington was recently named the 4th safest ‘City’ in New York, by SafeWise.com. This may have to do with the fact that Port Washington is locally renowned for valuing their traditional community lifestyle and a diverse array of social and fraternal organizations like the Lions, Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus. Port Washington is home to an Aging-In-Place initiative called “Project Independence” and also has 2 senior centers serving older local residents.

Port Washington’s schools are committed to an excellence in educating and preparing their students for a rapidly changing world.  “Port” schools seek to provide a safe and secure student-centered environment for overall learning – focused and founded upon mutual respect, cultivated creative and critical thinking, academics, athletics, arts, a community atmosphere, and, above all, ethical behavior. Port Washington families have a wide selection of educational options, many of which have been highly and consistently rated by the State of New York…with an overall score of 8 out of a possible 10!

Outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of Port Washington’s multitude of marinas, yacht clubs, and golf courses studded along the pristine coastline. Authors F. Scott Fitzgerald and Sinclair Lewis certainly found this seascape to be inspirational when they wrote some of their most famous work here.

Perhaps it is arts and entertainment you prefer?  Try The Landmark on Main Street, home of the Jeanne Rimsky Theater – a regional performance venue developed out of a commitment to preserving the historic Main Street School while simultaneously, enriching the lives of the community at large. The Landmark on Main Street is a veritable hub of culture and community service. Since 2004, it has provided, on its upper levels, 59 units of income-restricted housing for retirees, and on its lower levels, a children and teen center, parent resource center, gym, and of course the theater. The Jeanne Rimsky has hosted world-class artists of all kinds from around the globe.

Film buffs can take in a flick at two beautiful, world-class movie theaters located directly in town, while Cinema on the Bay is a free bi-weekly outdoor movie-going experience for friends and family alike. Presented by “Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington”.

Port Washington is also home to six different historic and educational destinations, among them, The Pride of Cow Bay Nautical Museum, Sands-Willets House, Dodge Homestead and The Sands Point Preserve – a location so picturesque, it is frequently chosen as a backdrop for national film and TV productions. Positioned comfortably on the Long Island Sound, this former Guggenheim Estate invites visitors to step into the decadent world of The Great Gatsby era…offering a bevy of lush gardens, stunningly maintained mansions, and impeccably manicured, stately grounds.
